The movie opens with Superman who crashes against the elegant lex den as a one-man wrecking crew, blowing up the doors from the hinges and launch the billionaire desk as if he were made of cardboard. Why? Because Lex took Krypto, Superman’s dog.
The clash is tense and raw. Lex, being lex, does not jump. He calmly sips his coffee while Superman the fumes in the face. It is the type of cold arrogance that you expect from the character in that situation.
There is a lot of emotion in the scene and you feel Superman’s fury, the moderation it takes in order not to transform Luthor into dust and the depth of the bond that shares with Krypto.
In the comics, Lex Luthor has a long and bad story of kidnapping the loved ones of Superman with Lois, Supergirl, but Kent, Jimmy Olsen. It is part of his twisted playbook. Taking Kypto makes him personal and cruel and shows that this version of Lex is ruthless.
There is also a possible deeper reason here. If Lex is trying to understand Kryptonian physiology, then Krypto’s jerk could be the first floor in a much darker surface. Anyway, joke with Superman’s dog? It is a guaranteed way to bring heat.
