More than two decades later 28 days later Redefined Zombie Cinema, director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland They returned to the gloomy world and full of anger that have helped to create, only this time, they are going bigger.
Spoiler in front!
28 years laterThe first of a new planned trilogy, hit the theaters and is not shy in pushing the boundaries. From Extreme Gore to full-on zombie nudity, the filmmakers do not punch and, surprisingly, the study did not ask them.
“We had a little next and backwards,” admits Boyle, “but Tom Rothman to Sony really leaning the vision. The horror expects you to push things to the limit. You want brutality, of course, but you also want the contrast. That’s why we have layered violence against the innocence of children and beautiful landscapes.
The story follows a family, played by Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-JohnsonAND Alfie Williams leaving their island isolated for the infected mainland. It doesn’t take long for things to turn into chaos.
A big surprise arrives in the final act when Jack O’ConnellJimmy Crystal reappears as a leader of worship, a turning point that moves away from the second film, already shot by the director Nia dacosta and set for a version of January 16th. I loved the end of this movie!
Garland explains that Jimmy and the film as a whole, were born from the reflection of the team on nostalgia and in the distorted memory. “This trilogy concerns the way we look back. The people of Cherry-Pick, forget or do not remember. That distortion is cooked in the world and on the characters. Jimmy is only a face of that cultural regression.”
The filmmakers actually started a different post-croce path. “I tried a script,” says Garland, “but it was too generic. That failure made us think biggerly, and the story on which we landed felt well. It is much wider than flow rate.”
As for the future of the trilogy? It is moving, but far from stone.
“The script for the third is not written,” says Garland. “There is a plan, a structure, a line of line with some characters, but each film is also alone. It is a bit like TV: things evolve while you shoot. You have to see how everything lands.”
Cillian Murphywho recited 28 days laterHe has returned as an executive producer and will play a wider role in the final episode. “He is briefly in Nia’s film”, Boyle reveals, “But the plan is for him to have an important presence in the third.”
The duo also noticed how the horror panorama and its audience has changed.
“When we made the first movie, someone told us:” No woman will look at him, “recalls Boyle.” He was dead. Women are now a huge part of the horror audience, and this has helped the genre to stay alive. The horror still thrives in theaters and that common experience – being frightened together with the dark – is powerful. We have to protect it. “
With the second chapter already on the way and the third looming, it is clear Boyle and Garland are thinking in the long term. Not only for fears, but the emotional and cultural depth that gives the horror genre its bite.
And if 28 years later It is any indication, they are not interested in playing us safely.
