James Gunn It has always been the type of narrator who puts the characters first, whether he is working with a sentient tree, a exhausted coat or a vigilante with his mouth dirty in a chromatic helmet.
Now, as Co-Ce di Dc Studios and the creative force behind the new DCU, it is taking the same mentality based on the character and is applying it to something a little more ambitious with an interconnected cinematographic universe that does not drown its audience in the tasks.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Gunn explained how his approach to the construction of the DCU is modeled by his experience with MCU. What worked, what he did not do and what he hopes to do differently. Gunn said:
“I am really trying to be careful that anyone can immerse themselves and see the story around and I don’t feel as if they were information. The other stories can provide an additional plot to what you are looking at.”
This idea of accessibility without sacrificing the depth and narration is the key to Gunn’s vision. It is clearly aware of the pitfalls that Marvel has encountered in recent years, with their temptular, often overwhelming continuity that has left the spectators randomly lost and fatigued.
With so many films and series that feed each other, keeping up with MCU has started to seem full -time job for fans. Gunn wants to avoid it.
It is designing the DCU so that each episode can be appreciated by itself, even if it is linked to a wider narrative. This means that you will not have to look at Superman Just to understand what’s going on SupergirlOr I need to binge three series to get the next movie.
But, for those who go all in, there will be deeper layers to discover. The director added:
“This could change along the line while we deepen in what is happening in this universe. It could be like Infinity War and Endgame, where you have to see Infinity War to find out what is happening on an endgame.
“But at this moment, I’m trying to keep it so as not to have to see Superman to see Supergirl, for example. Even if there are many things in Superman who leads to Peacemaker, you certainly don’t need to see him to see Peacemaker.”
It is an intelligent approach. Marvel’s first years thrived why Iron Man, Captain America: The First AvengerAND Thor They were all solid autonomous films with personality. The shared universe was a bonus, not a requirement. Gunn seems to regain that philosophy, at least for this initial wave of DCU titles.
With Superman hit the rooms 8 July 2025 e Pacifier Season 2 Landing on Max this August, we are about to see this new strategy in action. While the DCU has stumbled in the past trying to play Marvel, this new direction is rooted in a strong individual narrative with a slight touch of connective tissue.
We hope that the new chapter of DCU will learn from all the bad choices that Marvel has made in recent years.
