James Gunn He spoke a lot about what inspired his opinion Superman Like classic comics, giant monsters, emotional narrative, but now he has added something more personal to the list, that Disney time and Marvel fired him.
In a recent interview by Rolling Stone, Gunn opened on how his unexpected dismissal from Marvel in 2018 (Tweet filled) has changed more than his simple professional path. He also returned the way he writes and for those who are writing.
“There is no doubt that without that experience, I don’t think I would have written the Superman I wrote.
“I certainly wouldn’t do this job if I hadn’t been fired, but I don’t know if I would have done this job even if it wasn’t. I don’t think a character I pure would have attracted me enough.”
Before fire, Gunn admitted that his narrative had been modeled by a sort of pleasant instinct for people: borders, who made dark, launching punches wrapped in humor. But that event forced a turn.
“I don’t think he opened the door to write the pure superman. This has opened the door to stop creating so that I like it. This is minimizing it – so people would love me. I think of a certain level, everything I had done came from a pleasant place.”
DC had offered Gunn the Superman I work years ago, but refused it. It wasn’t ready. Not for the character, and not for the type of narration Superman requests.
“I needed the right way and this required time to think of a few thousand options before I get to work in working. But I also think that my life and career were a gradual softening of the edges.
“I still like the black comedy. I still have edges. But I liked to cause a lot. And today, even if I still seem to do it, I don’t like it very much. In my heart, I am quite sentimental. I think only in basic human values. I think that Guardians of the Galaxy was a good appetizer kit for that.”
When Marvel in the end restored Gunn for Guardians vol. 3He marked the end of one era and the beginning of another. The last chapter of the trilogy was also its most emotional and, with hindsight, a springboard towards the most idealist tone of Superman.
“They [Guardians] Having a lot of heart, but they have their oddity, oddity and angularness, and Superman is not like that, even if it has a lot of oddity from the outside.
“A flying dog in a cloak is strange. Giant walking robots and Kaijus-is all strange. But the very good nature of him, this really strong belief in what is right, sometimes perhaps because of fault, is what makes Superman who is.”
That type of sincerity is something that once Gunn may have reduced a joke, but now it is in front and in the center in its vision for the next era of DC.
“And this is not star-lord or rocket. He is not a boy who is angry or who covers his emotions. He is rather pure. And therefore getting to the place where I was able to write that character was a journey.
“In the past I would have done it by making fun of the character, and I don’t think it’s what I do here. I am less afraid of before.
“And I thought I was purely creative, but many times it was only anger to get rid of another way. I am less afraid of being foolish or sentimental, boring or straight.”
Superman It is not just a restart for DC. It is a restoration for Gunn himself, who is now an artist more comfortable with the hope that with sarcasm, and more interested in showing us what is good than deriding what he is.
