Fans spoke of the possibility of a Marvel and DC crossover movie for years. Would it be the last film mashup, but is it something that should actually happen, or just a fun idea that has remained best on the comic book page?
James GunnThe director behind Guardians of the galaxy AND SuicideAnd now Co-Head of DC Studios has given his opinion on the matter. In a new interview with Rolling Stone, Gunn does not reject the idea: in fact, he says it was a topic of true conversation.
“We talked about a billion times. This could easily happen, but simultaneously to this, I think it would be interesting. But I also think people are a bit above.”
It is an interesting thing to hear from someone who has worked deeply in both cinematographic universes. But Gunn is not talking about logistics, he is talking about creative value. He explained:
“I think people want to see good stories with their superheroes and this is what matters. And they want to see different types of stories with their superheroes. And people love superheroes. It is obvious, but they need multiple varieties and need more quality narration.
“And only to have Spider-Man and Superman Team will not do it if it is SH-T. So it has to come from a real place, and it is really difficult to do that job.”
Gunn also has a copy of Superman vs. The Amazing Spider-ManThe legendary crossover comic 1976, sitting in his office. That comic was a moment in the history of pop culture. But the times have changed, and so also the expectations of the public.
Gunn knows that the slap of logos does not equate to a satisfactory film, which is 100%truth. He added:
“I did Superman because I loved the character. I was enthusiastic about writing that movie. If I had to write a superman-care–man film, it’s a concept that I will be like” Oh, yes, this could be a great movie “? Or I’m doing it because” Oh, yes, people want to see Superman and Spider-Man Team “?”?
Gunn is not interested in the service of fans for the good of the show, and I don’t think the audience is not even. Gunn continued to say:
“For me, it should be – if we ever did it, it should have been under someone who thought it would be fantastic and it was not just a cash socket, because I don’t like them.”
This is not the first time that Gunn has entertained the Marvel/DC “What If?” In 2021, he revealed that he had floated the idea of a Harley Quinn and Groot crossover film during conversations with DC and Marvel managers.
“It is as if everyone was open to everything. But if something would ever happen, who knows? But the idea of being able to bring together Marvel and DC in a movie, it would be really fun for me.”
Fun, yes. But only if the story is there and makes sense to do it. Gunn was clear: “Seeing Crossover and Mashups constantly is less enchanting for me than a strong story”.
So, while a Marvel/DC crossover could be “easy” up for paper, Gunn is more interested in the fact that it is something that should happen. Until a story that is worth telling, do not expect the characters of these two universes to share the screen at any time soon.
