Steven Soderbergh directs a documentary on the last interview by John Lennon

Steven Soderbergh It is not one to repeat. From Ocean’s Eleven TO Infection To direct the films shot entirely on iPhone, the Oscar winner director always seems to find a new sandbox in which to play.

Now, he is immersing himself in one of the most touching and disturbing moments in the history of pop culture … the final interview of John Lennon.

Soderbergh is currently working on an unusual documentary focused on the latest in -depth conversation that Lennon gave, that he was recorded on December 8, 1980, a few hours before being killed outside his New York City house.

The film is already in production and aims to complete by the end of the year. A distributor has yet to be blocked.

This marks Soderbergh’s return to the documentary module after a long break. His last, And everything is going wellIt was a portrait of the monologue Spalding Gray, and arrived in 2010.

So what makes this interview so significant? It is the only radio interview Lennon e Yoko Ono gave the release of their return album Double Fantasy. That afternoon, the Rko radio team met the couple in their Dakota apartment.

The atmosphere was intimate, the raw and reflective conversation. Lennon had just turned 40. He was leaving a five -year break from music to grow his son, Sean. There was a true sense of clarity and renewal in his voice, like the beginning of a new chapter.

Just 12 hours later, Lennon had gone. Shot and killed by Mark David Chapman right away from home.

The weight of that interview is so heavy, especially when you hear Lennon say: “I believe that my job has not ended until I will be dead and buried, and I hope it is a long, long time”.

The Beatles continue to throw a long shadow in cinematographic and pop culture. Sam Mendes It is already working on a four -part biopic series, one for each member of the band, and is expected to fall in 2028. But Soderbergh’s approach will focus on a single moment, a conversation frozen over time, just before the world changes.
