Guillermo del Toro He is giving a tender and human ride on Liconica Frankenstein History, and is not interested in scaring you.
During a recent Panel at the Cannes Film Festival with the composer Alexandre DesplatDel Toro opened on his longtime adaptation of Mary Shelley Frankensteinwho is directing for Netflix. And for those who expect a direct horror movie? Not. Del Toro explained:
“Someone asked me the other day, does it have really frightening scenes? For the first time, I considered it. It is an emotional story for me. It is personal like anything else. I’m asking a question about being a father, being a son … I’m not asking a horror movie – I never try to do it.”
That perspective should not surprise fans of Del Toro’s work. That it is The shape of the water, Pan’s LabyrinthOR HellboyHis stories often focus on the creatures that the world sees as monsters and instead reveal something deeply empathic and human within them.
Desplat, who is working again with Del Toro FrankensteinHe echoed that emotional focus, saying:
“Guillermo’s cinema is very lyrical and my music is also quite lyrical. So I think that Frankenstein’s music will be something very lyrical and emotional … I’m not trying to write horrible music.”
The duo has not yet finalized the soundtrack, but are focusing on the emotional nucleus of the film. Del Toro added:
“We are finding the emotion and what I can say is, for me, is an incredibly emotional film.”
Their approach rests on the heart of history rather than horror, a direction that Del Toro runs around for decades. He even tracked down his charm with the creature of a scene Billy Wilder’S The itching of the seven years.
“The first time I thought I was about to avenge the creature was when Marilyn Monroe will come out [of the movies] In the itching of the seven years with Tom Ewell, and she says that the creature only needed someone he liked.
“I fell in love with Marilyn and I fell in love with the creature in that scene at an early age. And I thought, you know, all we have are the people who look at people in the wrong way. This is what we have in this world.”
