Spoiler for those who have not yet seen Thunderbolts*.
Marvel’s Thunderbolts* It does not waste time shaking things, and does it in a way that fans have not seen come. Just outside the gate, the film kills an important character and director Jake Schreier He knows exactly what kind of chaos that moment had to shake.
If you have seen the film, you already know the turning point. Otherwise, but it is also something that perhaps you have already understood looking at the trailers.
In the great first act move, Thunderbolts* sees the sudden death of Antonia Dreykov, aka Taskmaster (played by Olga Kurylenko).
The moment takes place during a stalemate inside Val’s Secret Vault, where Yelena, Ghost, John Walker and Taskmaster were each attracted separately under the illusion of the individual missions. Before someone realized that he is a setup, Ghost reacts quickly and made by fatally Taskmaster on his head.
When I saw the film, there was an audible collective jolt in the theater right now. I mean, many people knew that Taskmaster would not make it, we didn’t realize that it was so that it would go down.
Schreier, speaking with Gamesradar+, explained the creative reasoning behind the killing saying:
“Obviously, it’s a great decision. We felt like a film like this needed something like that, in which you are like, ‘Okay, if they do, they could do anything’, you know, and you really don’t know where it will go. He needed some shock or surprise.”
The theories on the death of Taskmaster had been floated long before the release of the film. Observing fans underlined his absence from the trailers and it was not even the Avengers: Doomsday Casting Livestream. However, nothing is comparable to the testimony that happens in real time.
Schreier admits that he has tuned all this during production, saying:
“Surely, when we did it, we ignored all this. I have not read anything. I want to say, since then I read, and it is how, yes, there is a long delivery time to get these films out there, and people will surely have their theories in marketing, it’s a part like this.”
But in the end, Schreier attached himself to a advice handed down among the ranks of the Marvel, something as a director of Spider-Man Jon Watts Once shared with him:
“When you sit at the theater and the lights go down, all that stuff disappears and you really want to try not to worry too much about what people will bring to the film and make sure that it works at history.”
One thing is certain: the Thunderbolts* do not play safe and Schreier would not have in any other way.
