If there is one thing Andor He has shown, it is that he does not need baits out of nostalgia to tell a compelling story. The show has always marched towards its rhythm without leaning too much on the crutches of the inheritance.
But in Andor Season 2, episode 6, a remarkable exception appeared: Senator Bail Organa appeared. Except this time, the character has not been played Jimmy Smits.
Bail organ was refusal and according to the creator of the series Tony GilroyIt was not for lack of attempts. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Gilroy shared:
“The programming did not work. We really tried, but it was not available and you don’t pay it.”
It is a bit of a broken heart for fans who have followed the Smits in the role since then Clone attack. From there, he contributed to modeling the quiet resistance Revenge of Sithsacrificed everything inside Rogue Oneand he returned briefly in Obi-Wan Kenobi.
So, the sudden switch has understandably raised some eyebrows. But Gilroy was in advance of the reality of the Casting Legacy, saying:
“Bringing the Legacy characters to be really complicated. It is very expensive. It is very, who works when there have been many efforts, but we have not been able to solve it as regards the programming.”
This is where the president of Lucasfilm Kathleen Kenedy intervened by recommending Benjamin Bratt (Coco, law and order) to play the role. Gilroy fully embraced the idea, praising both the choice and Bratt himself.
“It was only a brilliant idea. It is a wonderful and really eager and loved human being on the set and really happy with what he does.”
However, Gilroy knew that the recasting deposit would unleash the conversation. So he did something intelligent, cooked the discussion on the release strategy.
“We do not do many things that are not necessary, but it is like, ‘Portamolo here now that people can discuss them for a week and pull it out of their system and then can really go back to work.’ I didn’t want the boy’s work to be confused with his introduction.
I have no problems with the change of casting, I think Bratt is an excellent choice to fill the Bail Organa show. Of course, it is a pity that they could not get the blows, but damned, they made the effort and tried. In the end, the show and the story they are telling is still good!
