HBO has published an excellent trailer for their next documentary in two original parts, Pee-wee as himselfwith Paul Reubens Telling the story of his life, just before dying at the age of 70 in 2023, after his battle against cancer. The film is directed by Matt Wolf (Hbo’s The walk), with participants in the foreground including Reubens’ sister Abby Rubenfeldartists Gary Panter AND Wayne Whiteactors Lynne Stewart, John Moody, Alison Mank, Natasha Lyonne, S. Epatha Merkerson, Laurence Fishburne, Debi Mazar, David Arquette, Laraine NewmanAND Cassandra Petersonand filmmakers Tim Burton AND Judd apatow.
The synopsis recites: “Guided by an interview with the soul with Paul Reubens, the man behind the iconic character Pee-Wee Herman, Pee-Wee as himself is the definitive portrait of the comic executor and a window in his personal life never discussed.
“Determined to correct the record and tell the factual history of his life, Reubens digs his kaleidoscopic influences, the origins in the circus and the theater of avant -garde performance and career choices, reflecting on the reasoning behind and on the consequences, separating his beloved alter ego from his authentic self.
“Intended by over 40 hours of films of interviews filmed before Reubens’ premature death in 2023, 1,000 hours of archival movies and tens of thousands of photographs never seen before his personal collections, the film tells the influences of Reubens, from growing in the city of the Circus of Sarasota, Florida, to its theatrical training of Avant-Garde to the California Institute of the Arts.
“By combining his love for performance art and comedy, Reubens joined the legendary Improv group, where he created Pee-Wee Herman, the Impish character who would have come to define his career.
“Becoming a cultural comparison stone of the 80s with his successful film” Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure “, and his TV series for children winning Emmy® sweetly subversive” Pee-Wee’s Playhouse “, Reubens has ever chosen to be photographed or interviewed publicly as himself-a artistic choice to present Pee-Wee Herman as a real person not to be confused with his creator.
“From the” game of appointments “to the regular apparitions in” The David Letterman Show “, Reubens has never broken the character, living his dream of making art of performance in pop mainstream culture. When Reubens was arrested in an adult cinema in 1991, his anonymity was destroyed and made a prey to the growing attachment of the media for Salari and Spuri.
“From time to time he shoots with the director of the documentary on creative control, Reubens speaks candidly and sometimes with difficulty, on his personal and professional challenges before and after his arrests.
“Next to the interviews with artists and actors of” Pee-Weee’s Playhouse “and prominent figures in his life, Reubens openly discusses further legal battles, his exemption, his last resurrection as a public personality and the apotheosis of Pee-Wee as an adored and lasting cultural icon.
“The result is a revealing, exhilarating and complex portrait of Reubens and a celebration of the enormous and indelible inheritance that leaves behind.”
