Making a successful big budget movie is hard enough in normal conditions, but shooting The Batman In the middle of a global pandemic? It was a completely different beast for some filmmakers.
The cast and crew of these films have had to navigate in protocols, arrests and rigorous isolation. AND Jeffrey Wrightwho played the detective Jim Gordon The Batman As was that experience, he paints an image of his experience that plays directly from a psychological horror film.
In a recent interview with Men’s Health, Wright recalled the surreal nature of the filming of the Robert Pattinson–guid Batman Movies. He did not only have to do with an intense production, he was struggling with the psychological toll of prolonged isolation. And when the time has come to shoot one of the most crucial scenes of the film, he heard the weight of everything.
The actor said: “You must be fluid and find your way. I want to say, in that interrogation scene, I could not remember my jokes. I had come across that scene.
“I came back to London. It was in the middle of the pandemic. It was my third quarantine. And in the end I didn’t leave my hotel room for 10 days in a row.”
Ten consecutive days blocked in a room before entering a set of high pressure films … damn, it is no wonder that he fought to enter the right -minded space.
While the interrogation scene, which is a fundamental moment in the film that requires Wright to be acute, methodical and completely composed. But after almost two weeks in insulation, his mind was not where he had to be.
Even beyond the set, the shooting experience seemed disturbing. London was in bulk. Wright lived in a huge almost deserted hotel, which made the whole situation look more like a horror movie. He compared it with one of the most infamous environments in cinema:
“My head was in such a strange place. We were in a hotel of 200 people, but there were only two other people there; it was like living inside the hotel from Splendor.
“When I finally went to work, I was just everywhere. So, I was tolerated and in the end we took it. But that was a scenario that I had never experienced before. So, yes, I would have had to take an ice bath.”
Despite all obstacles, Wright offered a fantastic performance in the film. All the whole pandemic thing was such a strange moment and looking at it now that it is a dream of fever in which life was paused for a while. The whole experience was a psychological horror film for everyone.
