Set in a futuristic era called Universal Century, the story takes place during a brutal conflict between the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon, a colony spatial that seeks independence from the oppressive rule of the earth.

Zeon uses advanced mobile clothes, humanoid combat machines piloted from soldiers, to obtain the upper hand at war. The story follows Amuro Ray, a boy who finds himself piloting the prototype of mobile suit of the Earth Federation, the RX-78-2 Gundam, after a Zeon attack on his colony.
