Actor Josh Gad (Frozen, Beauty and the Beast, Wolf like me) almost landed a role in the 2009 sci-fi epic Avatarsbut he didn’t quite have the director of the physical archetype James Cameron he was looking for.
In the actor’s new memoir, We trust in Gadshe remembers him desperately trying to find a reprieve from acting The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling BookOn Broadway, he auditioned for other television and film roles. And “one of the first things” he tried was something “new.” James Cameron movie called Avatars.”
“I signed up and shortly after received a call that Cameron wanted to fly me to Los Angeles for a final recall at his Lightstorm production offices,” he said. If he had been cast, Gad would have played “the role of Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) best friend and translator of the alien race known as the Na’vi.
Gad continued: “Apparently I don’t understand [the role] because, while James Cameron was said to be thrilled with my audition, when I was transformed into a Digital Avatar I supposedly looked like a tall, overweight Smurf.
The role then went Joel David Moorewho plays Norm Spellman in Avatarsa close confidant of Jake Sully and an expert in the Na’vi language.
The film became the highest-grossing film of all time, grossing $2.9 billion worldwide to date. The sequel, Avatar: The Way of Waterit currently sits in third place with a gross of $2.3 billion.
Luckily for Gad, his career, both on and off Broadway, has continued to thrive, and aside from his deals with Disney, he’s working on several other upcoming projects, including his own sequel. Spaceballs 2which has been confirmed.
