Should the Oscars take a backseat? Stephen King weighs in amidst the fires

With more than 100,000 people affected by the devastating Southern California wildfires, the excitement around awards season seems out of this world.

The 97th Academy Awards has already changed its schedule by delaying nominations and extending voting deadlines, but some think that’s not enough.

Stephen Kingwho is someone who never stops himself from thinking, suggested canceling the event altogether. He wrote on Bluesky:

“I will not vote in the Oscars this year. IMHO they should delete them. No glitz with Los Angeles on fire.

Honestly, he’s right. How do you roll out the red carpet when so many are dealing with such loss? I agree with King on this. This just doesn’t seem like the time to celebrate and feed Hollywood’s ego.

Meanwhile, the Academy announced this week that nominations will still be released on Thursday, January 23 at 5:30am PT. The voting period was extended to January 17, giving members more time amid the chaos.

Actress Jean Smart also weighed in, offering a thoughtful compromise. He suggested that networks airing awards shows could “donate the revenue they would have collected to fire victims and firefighters.”

It’s a difficult balance to celebrate creativity and achievement while others face crisis. Maybe Hollywood can put the Oscars on hold and do something meaningful instead.

What do you think?
