I have a great sci-fi short film to watch today called I’m not a robotand the film is among the final 15 short films considered for Best Short Film at this year’s Academy Awards. I had the chance to see the film for the first time at FilmQuest and it’s really cool that it actually has a chance of getting an Oscar nomination.
In the film, “After repeatedly failing Captcha tests, music producer Lara becomes obsessed with a disturbing question: Could she be a robot?”
The film comes from the director Vittoria Warmerdamand speaking about the film, he said that it is “a short film that delves into the complexities of human identity, technology and artificial intelligence, in which I explore my apprehensions about these blurred boundaries.
“It’s a narrative that also touches on themes of labeling, embracing uniqueness, and championing equality and feminism.”
Talking about his inspiration, he said: “My inspiration for this story came when I repeatedly encountered the captcha ‘I am not a robot’ while trying to access a specific website or program.
“After several failed attempts, an ironic thought crossed my mind: what if I turned out to be a robot? The idea of my life revealed by this revelation intrigued me.
“It led me to contemplate how my existence might change if the very foundations of my beliefs crumbled beneath me, leaving me without solid ground to stand on.
“This introspection served as a catalyst for writing this narrative, a way to give shape to my anxieties at the intersection of technology and humanity.”
The film won the jury award for best short film at the FilmQuest Film Festival and also won the best short film award at Sitges.
