Jon M. Chu Shares Update on Britney Spears Biopic: ‘She’ll Be Very Involved’

Director Jon M. Chu is working hard to bring us the second installment of his Evil duology, but also had a slate that went beyond the iconic film pair, and that includes the Britney Spears biopic based on her 2023 memoir The woman in me. At the Golden Globes, Chu shared an update on the film and how involved the pop star will be in telling her story.

Chu told Entertainment Tonight on the awards show red carpet:

“She will be very involved. I haven’t started anything fully yet, but she will be very involved in this. I have ideas and things, an approach, but it’s very early.

Universal Pictures has acquired the rights to the acclaimed #1 bestseller. 1 in the critically acclaimed New York Times, which Spears signed in 2022 in a publishing deal worth $15 million. After it was revealed The woman in me would become a film, fans have been casting for the lead role, which the director says he has seen.

“I’ve seen all the fan castings and I always take them into consideration because maybe there’s a good idea out there,” Chu said. “But we’ll have to see what the film’s approach is before we know who’s right.”

The memoir follows Spears’ path to stardom and how she defined herself through life’s twists and turns. The book has sold over 2.5 million copies in the United States in hardcover, ebook, and audiobook formats.

In a separate interview with Advertising billboardChu said he was “a big Britney fan”, adding:

“I’ve been a fan since I was young, and she was young, and she was one of 12 performers at the Shrine Auditorium. So I want to do her justice and tell her story the right way. But we’ll see. We are developing it now and there is still a long way to go.”

Chu has proven that he knows how to tell a good story, now we just need to choose the right casting. I appreciate the fact that Spears is involved in the production, because it will be much better knowing that we are getting information directly from the source.
