Warner Bros. is reportedly planning to produce more DUNE films with or without director Denis Villeneuve

While we know the director Denis Villeneuve is currently in development Duna: Messiah a new report has emerged that Warner Bros. is planning to move forward with at least one more film, with or without director Villeneuve.

The studio is trying to prepare for a long-term expansion of the Dune universe, even if director Villeneuve chooses not to stay on board. Villeneuve, who masterfully brought Frank Herbert’s epic science fiction story to life with the first two Dune films, has made clear his intention to end his involvement after the adaptation Duna: Messiah. But the studio may have different plans.

According to scooper Daniel Richtman, and later confirmed by World of Reel, Warner Bros. is actively considering producing at least one more Dune films beyond Messiahas well as a second Dunethemed TV series.

While that of HBO Dune: Prophecy hasn’t achieved the critical success of Villeneuve’s films, its solid audience suggests there’s still a strong appetite for more stories set in this universe.

Villeneuve expressed reservations about adapting later novels in the Herbert saga, including Children of Dune AND God Emperor of Dunedescribing their narratives as increasingly “esoteric”.

This explains why the director is reluctant to commit to the long-term future of the franchise. A source from Coil World revealed that Villeneuve “was quite bothered by these potential plans to expand the franchise, with or without him.”

Given the huge success of the first two films, it’s no surprise that Warner Bros. wants to keep the momentum going. However, fans may have a hard time imagining this Dune continuing without Villeneuve’s visionary touch.

The director has already spoken previously Messiahsaying, “Let’s say I thought that after part two I’m going to take a break, that I’m going to go back to the woods and stay in the woods for a while to recover.

“But the forest wasn’t really for me and I got back behind the camera quicker than I thought. But that’s all I can say.”

The director then shared some plot details saying that the theme of war will be at the center of the adaptation, adding Duna: second part“to save his friends, [Paul Atredies] a war must start.”

Frank Herbert’s Duna: Messiah is set 12 years after the events of the first book and follows Paul Atreides, now Emperor of the Known Universe. Paul’s rule is marked by political intrigue, religious fervor, and the consequences of his prescient visions.

As he navigates the complexities of his position, Paul faces challenges from various factions, including the powerful Bene Gesserit Sisterhood, who seek to control his bloodline.

Amidst all this turmoil, Paul’s relationship with his wife Chani and his young children adds a personal dimension to his difficulties.
