DOWNTON ABBEY 3 Producer Says Sequel Will Pay ‘Meaningful’ Tribute to Maggie Smith and Her Character

Beloved actress Maggie Smith she passed away this year at the end of September, and despite her legacy of two Oscars and a long list of memorable roles, her absence will still be felt sorely in the upcoming film. Downton Abbey 3.

The sequel to the TV series and the previous two films will pay homage to Smith, whose character, the Dowager Countess, died at the end of the second film. Downton Abbey: a new era.

Executive Producer Gareth Neame promises that the third film will include a tribute to both the character and Smith herself. Neame told TVLine:

“The fact that Dame Maggie herself has since died, I think, gave an added poignancy to a story we would have planned anyway.

After the loss of the widow, it now seems much more meaningful to see actors playing characters grieving for the family matriarch. But I also see the actors mourn the matriarch of the show, and it feels more genuine and meaningful.”

Neame calls her loss “the end of an era”, saying: “We will never see the likes of Dame Maggie Smith again.” He also said the Downton Abbey The “tremendous respect” of the cast and crew “will show in the next film.”

Coming back for part 3 is Hugh Bonneville, Elizabeth McGovern, Michelle Dockery, Laura Carmichael, Jim Carter, Phyllis Logan, Robert James Collier, Joanne Froggatt, Allen Leech, Penelope Wilton, Lesley Nicol, Michele Fox, Raquel Cassidy, Brendan Coyle, Kevin Doyle, Harry Hadden-Paton, Sophie McShera, Douglas Reit AND Dominic West along with exciting new additions, Paolo Giamatti, Joely Richardson, Alessandro Nivola, Simon Russell Beale, Arty Froushanand many others.

Downton Abbey 3 will be released in theaters on September 12, 2025.
