Antoine de Massy has been found dead in a public garden in Monaco at the age of 29, local authorities have confirmed.

Local authorities have taken one person into custody in connection with the investigation. Police in the Principality are looking into the circumstances of his death, while the possibility of an accident also remains under consideration.

The sudden loss prompted a public tribute on Monday from Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene, who expressed their support and sympathy for the family.

In an official statement, the royal couple said they learned with sadness of the death of Antoine de Massy. They described him as a passionate tennis player who was part of a family history closely tied to the sport in the Principality, adding that they shared the grief of his loved ones and offered their sincere condolences during this difficult time.

Palace statement and family ties

Antoine de Massy was the grandson of Princess Antoinette, the elder sister of Monaco's former ruler Prince Rainier III. He was the son of Prince Albert's first cousin, Christian de Massy, and was also the grandson of Antony Noghes, the prominent sports administrator who founded the Automobile Club de Monaco.

The de Massy lineage forms an extended branch of the House of Grimaldi, the ruling dynasty of Monaco. Antony Noghes is widely remembered in motorsport history for establishing the prestigious Monaco Grand Prix through the streets of Monte Carlo in 1929, as well as helping to create the historic Monte Carlo Rally.

Sport played a major role in de Massy's own life, particularly on the tennis court. In pursuit of an athletic career, he relocated to Miami with his father so that he could devote himself entirely to the game.

Tennis career and royal duties

In a 2012 interview with Vogue Italia, de Massy discussed his decision to pursue tennis professionally. He explained that it was a difficult choice, but stressed that it was his own decision. He noted that his father had made clear from the start that he had to give his best and that once he made up his mind, there was no turning back.

The news comes as 62-year-old Prince Albert and 48-year-old Princess Charlene maintain a full calendar of royal responsibilities. The couple, who share 11-year-old twins Crown Prince Jacques and Princess Gabriella, recently attended the opening of the Ida day care centre in Monaco.

The sovereign and his wife had also travelled to Metz in north-eastern France for an official meeting with Pope Leo XIV. Monegasque authorities are continuing their investigation into de Massy's death as forensic inquiries proceed.
