Red Wings flight to Moscow delayed eight hours in Nyagan

A Red Wings Airlines flight from Nyagan to Moscow was delayed for eight hours after passengers boarded and waited for engines to start.

The passenger plane eventually departed for the Russian capital after undergoing additional technical maintenance, representatives for the carrier told the Russian news outlet Lenta.ru.

According to the Telegram channel Shot, travellers sat inside the cabin for an extended period waiting for the engines to power up before airline staff returned them to the airport terminal. Departure was subsequently postponed several times by one hour at a time.

During the disruption, preliminary information indicated that Red Wings might fly a reserve aircraft into Nyagan to collect the stranded passengers and deliver them to Moscow before technicians cleared the original plane.

Red Wings stated that the flight was rescheduled due to specific conditions related to ground handling at the airport. The airline press service said staff provided passengers with drinks and hot meals during the wait, adding that flight and passenger safety remains an absolute priority for the company.

Regional transport in western Siberia

Nyagan is a town in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug, also known as Yugra, situated in western Siberia roughly 1,900 kilometres northeast of Moscow. The remote settlement relies heavily on air transport to connect its energy sector workers with major Russian cities, as road and rail journeys across the taiga require extensive travel times.

Nyagan Airport operates regular scheduled flights across the northern territory, where harsh weather conditions and specialised ground servicing equipment frequently present logistical demands for carrier crews. Red Wings Airlines, founded in 1999 and headquartered in Moscow, provides scheduled domestic routes connecting regional Siberian destinations to the capital, alongside extensive commercial charter services.

Yamal Airlines aborted takeoff

The delay in Nyagan follows a separate Russian aviation incident that occurred the previous month. In September, a passenger airliner operated by Yamal Airlines abruptly aborted its takeoff roll because of a suspected onboard fire, forcing the flight crew to taxi back to the airport terminal for safety inspections.

Yamal Airlines is another regional carrier based in western Siberia, with headquarters in Salekhard in the neighbouring Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug. The company operates passenger services across Russia's Arctic and Siberian territories, maintaining crucial transport links across remote regions that face demanding operational environments.
