The fans of Sonic the Hedgehog movie franchises are a lot like Marvel fans, as all diehards know that you have to stick around until after the credits, as a post-credits scene or two is inevitable.
These scenes definitely tease another Sonic-themed adventure and at least one new fan-favorite character we’ll be excited to see come to the big screen. And if what the authors say is true, we will have many more adventures with Sonic and Friends in the future.
Writers Pat Casey AND Josh Miller sat down with Collider to talk about the future of the franchise, and Miller was quick to acknowledge fans’ excitement at seeing the franchise’s expansive universe come to life, and teased numerous sequels, even beyond the already greenlit fourth film:
“It’s a really obvious answer, but it’s crazy that we’re three movies in and we keep introducing essentially two new characters in each sequel.
“And we still know that fans are saying, ‘When are we going to see such and such? And this?” So it’s not hard to imagine that there could easily be many more sequels and continue to expand the universe.”
Miller also touched on the wealth of untapped material in Sonic lore, particularly his origins.
“The franchise didn’t have much bearing on where Sonic came from. I mean, I know Sega has its own specific parameters of what to do with it, but there’s still a lot of room to grow.”
Casey added that Sega’s growing trust in the team allowed for greater creative flexibility with each subsequent film.
“I feel like these films, as they continue to be successful, we’re also gaining more and more leeway from Sega as they trust us more and more. Sega has been a great partner.”
However, Casey couldn’t resist giving a cheeky nod to one of the franchise’s most unconventional characters:
“Someday we’ll get Big the Cat involved in these things. That’s where it’s all going to end.” Miller enthusiastically accepted, joking, “Yes! In Sonic the Hedgehog part ten! Finally. Big the Cat is our Thanos, you know?”
Seriously, it was a lot of fun watching these movies. Every member of my family loves them and I think that’s why they did so well. The humor and storytelling are spot on and appeal to every viewer. I look forward to the future of Sonic the Hedgehog film franchise.
