From Marvel What if…? recently wrapped its third and final season on Disney+, but not everyone was impressed. While critics gave the season a decent 75% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, general audiences were less forgiving, with a lackluster score of 46%.

Beau De Mayothe former chief writer of X-Men ’97he didn’t hold back in sharing his thoughts on the season, echoing the audience’s discontent.

Heading to X over the weekend, DeMayo delivered a scathing critique: “#whatif season 3, ouch, ouch.”

If that wasn’t clear enough, DeMayo followed up in the comments with a dose of sarcasm, saying, “I would look more to give notes on how it could have easily been done better, but I have some water to watch boil.” .”

As fans responded, DeMayo elaborated on his complaints. When a user has expressed concern about X-Men ’97 In season two, DeMayo revealed that there were some frustrations behind the scenes with Marvel and What if…? writer Matthew Chauncey, who joined X-Men ’97 write the third season and supervise the rewrites of the second season.

DeMayo stated that his original plan for intertwined, time-jumping episodes was scrapped because it was deemed “too complicated”.

DeMayo continued to call What if…? The third season was “mediocre” and criticized it as “fanfic”, accusing it of having “flat and obvious” dialogue and a “weird” premise.

He attributed the decline in quality to the showrunner’s departure AC Bradleystating, “Season 3 is the one where A.C. Bradley completely retired to let Chauncey take over.”

This criticism comes following his firing by Marvel in March 2024, shortly before the premiere of X-Men ’97.
