Nicholas Hoult says his Lex Luthor will be ruthless to defeat SUPERMAN in the next film

James Gunnof his upcoming DC tentpole film Superman came out this week and gave us our first really in-depth look at the story’s characters. One of the main protagonists of this film is Superman’s nemesis, Lex Luthor, by whom he is played Nicola Hoult. He’s just the latest in a long line of actors to take on the role of the villain, but he seems to put his own spin on the character.

In a Q&A held on the Warner Bros. lot after the Superman trailer, ComicBook reports that Hoult has provided new information on his portrayal of Lex Luthor.

“The most exciting thing for me about this Lex was being in a James Gunn universe. Like you said, so emotionally raw and powerful, but huge in the scope of the world and what it’s creating.

He then talked about how “ruthless” Lex will have to be to stay one step ahead of the Man of Steel, and how some fans will understand Lex’s thought process in believing he’s better for the world than Superman.

“And I think with that Lex, obviously, is intelligent and ruthless and has to get the better of Superman on some levels because he can’t match him on others. But there’s also something about this character, hopefully from my perspective, where even though maybe you don’t agree with his process, there’s an element where you can understand on some levels where he’s coming from and why maybe what he is pushing as his ideology is perhaps better for humanity.”

Hoult is a great actor and I am confident he will give a great performance. I can’t wait to see the story James Gunn chose to tell.

Superman stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman; Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane; Nicola Hoult as Lex Luthor; Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern; Isabela Mercede as Hawkgirl; Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt/Mr. Terrific; Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen; María Gabriela de Faría in the role of Angela Spica, aka The Engineer; Sara Sampaio as Eva Teschmacher; AND Terence Rosemore as Otis.

Superman will launch the cinematic portion of DC Studios’ Gods and Monsters: Part 1. The theatrical release is scheduled for July 11, 2025.
