James Gunn talks about striking the perfect balance between Silver Age nostalgia and modern storytelling in SUPERMAN

The first trailer of James Gunn’S Superman has arrived and fans are already thrilled with its vibrant Silver Age-inspired graphics.

With bright colors and imaginative sci-fi elements, the aesthetic is a clear homage to Superman’s comic book roots of the 1950s and 1960s. But Gunn is also creating a story that goes deeper than the superficial plots often associated with that era.

In a press conference during the trailer premiere, Gunn shared his vision of blending classic Silver Age imagery with modern character-driven storytelling.

He said: “I love the Silver Age of comics in terms of aesthetics. But… this is the story of a man, his external and internal obstacles and what he faces in life, and that’s what the film is about.”

While the images may evoke the vibrant atmosphere of Superman’s early days, Gunn emphasized that the heart of Superman lies in its exploration of the character as a person.

Gunn explained, “It’s about taking the character of Superman and really understanding who he is as an individual and what his personal obstacles are in this movie.

“Even though some of the imagery is very Silver Age, I don’t think it’s a very Silver Age plot. So it has both traditional and new elements. And I think that’s where we’ll find our balance.”

The challenge for Gunn was to honor long-standing expectations surrounding Superman while pushing the character in new directions.

“Superman is one of the most popular, famous, characters in the world, and everyone has their own idea of what he should be like,” he said. “Finding something that was as real and authentic as possible… it was trial and error, trial and error, trial and error.”

A key to achieving this authenticity was collaborating with the film’s creative team, including costume designer Juliana Makovsky and the VFX department.

They worked together to blend retro Silver Age charm with grounded realism. “We wanted to give it that Silver Age feel, but, again, also see those things in a way we hadn’t seen them before.”

So, this will be a film that honors Superman’s legacy while offering a fresh and honest take on the character.

As Gunn said: “At the end of the day, if I can create something that’s authentic, then I think it works.” Based on the trailer that was released, it looks like it delivered on that promise.
