Oscar-winning actor John C. Reilly (Chicago, stepbrothers) will soon appear on the big screen in the role of Buffalo Bill Heads or tails?a surreal western by the Italian director duo Alessio Rigo de Righi AND Matteo Zoppis (The story of the king crab). The film is inspired by a true event that happened during Buffalo Bill’s stay in Italy.
Reilly is joined in the cast by the French actress Nadia Tereszkiewicz (Red Island, The crime is mine); That of Italy Alessandro Borghi (The Eight Mountains, Supersex); and that of Argentina Pietro Lanzani (Argentina, 1985, The Angel, The clan).
Italian cowboys known as “butteri” – and hailing from the central plains of northern Lazio through the Italian coastal region of Maremma to southern Tuscany – have a long-standing connection to Buffalo Bill and the history of the American Wild West.
Buffalo Bill, born William F. Cody, was a 19th-century American frontiersman who became famous as a scout, buffalo hunter, and showman, most notably producing the popular show “Buffalo Bill’s Wild West,” which dramatized frontier life for audiences around the world.
In 1890, Buffalo Bill brought his “Wild West” show to Naples and then traveled north to Rome as part of his European tour that offered an authentic wild frontier experience and showcased the skills of American cowboys.
Heads or tails?which is now in post, is inspired by a famous bet fought on the outskirts of Rome between Buffalo Bill’s American cowboys and the Italian ones over which team was better at taming wild horses. According to Italian legend, the Italians won.
The western set in Italy revolves around two young lovers named Rosa and Santino – played by Tereszkiewicz and Borghi – who flee after the murder of her husband.
“Everyone is on their trail, but no one knows the truth,” reads the synopsis provided. Santino is the Italian cowboy who was instrumental in beating Buffalo Bill’s team.
De Righi and Zoppis made a splash in the 2022 Cannes Directors’ Fortnight with their first feature film “The Tale of King Crab” which, somewhat similar to “Heads or Tails?”, was a retelling of a local Italian legend.
