The first trailer of Superman recently debuted and the super-powered dog Krypto was one of the big highlights as he rushes to help a brutally beaten Superman who crashes in cold, snowy weather.
During a recent press event for the film, James Gunn talked about Krypto and including him in the story. He began by saying, “I think we’re seeing that right from the start we’re seeing a little bit of a different side of Superman than we’ve seen.”
“This film ultimately isn’t about power. This movie is about a vague term of the word human being and who he is as a person and virtually struggling in his daily life, and in the beginning we see a different side of him.
Speaking about Superman’s relationship with Krypto, he said: “His relationship with Krypto is complicated. He’s nowhere near the best dog. There’s a lot more to Krypto than what you see in this trailer.
Gunn continued: “It was a way of saying we’re embracing the whole Superman mythology. These superhero movies took the characters and said, “Okay, yeah, he’s Batman, but he’s not any of the other stuff.” He’s Superman, but he’s not any of the other things.
“He lives in a world of superheroes. This is an alternate historical world where superheroes exist but it’s also incredibly grounded. It’s about real people having real lives, there happen to be some metahumans in there. Superman has friends who are other superheroes.
Gunn adds: “He has a flying dog and a giant fortress. It has a lot of the things we love about the comics and the Superman mythology that we didn’t get to see in a movie and we definitely didn’t get to see in a grounded way.
Superman will tell the story of “Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas.
“He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.”
“It’s set in a world very different from ours and very far from the DCEU. Heroes have been around for centuries and we’ll see how that has influenced the history of this world and shaped the DCU.”
Superman stars David Corenswet in the role of Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane; Nicola Hoult as Lex Luthor; Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern; Isabela Mercede as Hawkgirl; Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt/Mr. Terrific; Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen; María Gabriela de Faría in the role of Angela Spica, aka The Engineer; Sara Sampaio as Eva Teschmacher; AND Terence Rosemore as Otis.
Superman will launch the cinematic portion of DC Studios’ Gods and Monsters: Part 1. The theatrical release is scheduled for July 11, 2025.
