A STAR TREK fan blames her company-themed license plate for thousands of dollars in tickets

A Long Island retiree says she gets tickets from all over the country and her love for Star Trek it could be to blame.

Beda Koorey, 76, stopped driving four years ago, when she gave up her old habit Star Trek license plate, which had the same number as the starship Enterprise – NCC-1701, then sold his car and stopped driving.

But she has continued to receive tickets for her license plates, and they flow in regularly. Koorey explained to CBS News, “These came in yesterday from Chicago, speed tickets. They’re $100 each.” She continued: “I don’t have a car. I don’t drive. Those license plates have been turned in. They’re persistent and keep giving me tickets.”

Apparently, for $15 on Amazon and eBay, some Trekkies have easily replaced their real plates with the same new plates and gotten away with it. The accumulated tickets from all over the country are sent to Koorey.

“Red light, speeding, parking, school zone,” he said, describing the types of tickets he receives. It also gets hit with E-ZPass tolls.

“I got a call from Ohio, a police chief looking for license plates because they were involved in a robbery,” Koorey said, “The whole country has my name and address for tickets I don’t even owe.”

The New York Department of Motor Vehicles says original license plates used illegally on the streets are a matter for law enforcement and nothing in its system links Koorey to his previous license plate.

The DMV also said it is up to each state and billing entity to ensure they are using the most up-to-date New York DMV data.

For example, he doesn’t drive a motorcycle, but he received a fine. “I’m out of ink. I’m out of stamps,” Koorey said, trying to answer every summons. Koorey has hearing and vision problems. She said the reason for her tears of frustration is because she was billed tens of thousands of dollars. “Yes, because I can’t afford it. I’m on a fixed income,” Koorey said.

In the days after the CBS News New York story aired, several lawmakers pledged to help Kooreyand a pro bono attorney met with her Friday to help her resolve the complicated matter.

I hope this problem will be taken off this poor lady’s shoulders and she will be able to return to receiving her normal ration of mail. It’s not his fault and it shouldn’t be his problem. It shouldn’t be this painful to be a Star Trek fan.
