Sony’s Kraven the Hunter almost made his MCU debut twice, but it didn’t work out

Sony’s Kraven the Hunter is in theaters now, and whether fans love or hate what the studio has made, it’s officially part of Sony’s checkered history. The character almost made his big screen debut for Marvel a few years ago, a couple of times, but it never came to fruition.

You might think that the classic web crawler villain would only be meant to appear in a Spider-Man movie, but the first time he was approached was by Black Panther director Ryan Coogler. He explained during a 2018 interview with Yahoo! UNITED KINGDOM:

“I’ve always loved Kraven the Hunter in almost every version of him. So there was a moment: ‘Can I get Kraven?’ – and they were [like]’No, you don’t have Kraven.’ It was one of those where I was like, “Oh, man.” But I don’t even know if he would have worked in the film we made, it was early days.”

It could have been cool to see, but Marvel or Sony took a look at that idea and we got a fantastic result Black Panther movie that told a fantastic story with a now fan-favorite villain, Killmonger, played by Michael B. Jordan.

The next time Kraven was officially considered for a Marvel release was when he was a director Jon Watts was planning to complete his Spider-Man: Home trilogy.

The threequel of 2021 Spider-Man: No Way Home it was a massive multiverse-splitting undertaking and brought in some incredible characters for a truly fantastic film. But when ideas were still floating around, Kraven was proposed once again.

Spider-Man actor Tom Holland he told Collider in 2021 that Watts pitched the idea to him in case the multiverse story didn’t work out:

“For a long time there was going to be a Kraven movie that was going to be the third movie because things weren’t working and a whole bunch of different things.

“Jon pitched me this Kraven movie, which was actually really great. I don’t want to talk about it in case that movie ends up happening in the future, but it was fun.

Again, I loved the movie we got, so while Kraven’s story could have been interesting, it just wasn’t meant to be at the time.

From Marvel Kraven the Hunter left fans divided. Have you already seen it? What are your thoughts? Would you like to see the character incorporated into the MCU and handled differently in the future?
