A24 has released a brutally intense trailer for the upcoming war thriller Warwhich was co-directed by Alex Garland (Civil war) and Iraq War veteran Ray Mendozawho tells his stories from memory of what it was like to be there. The film also takes place in real time.
The synopsis reads: “Based on former Navy Seal Ray Mendoza’s real-life experiences as a soldier during the Iraq War. Mendoza joined the Navy in 1997 and served for over 16 years as a member of SEAL Team 5, Land Warfare Training Detachment, and a BUD/s instructor.
“He was awarded a Silver Star ‘for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving as Chief Communicator, Naval Special Warfare Task Force-Ramadi, in direct support of Operation Iraqi Freedom on 19 November 2006. “
The film has a great ensemble cast which includes Will Poulter, D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Cosmo Jarvis, Kit Connor, Finn Bennett, Taylor John Smith, Adain Bradley, Noah Centineo, Evan Holtzmann, Henrique Zaga, Michele Gandolfini, Joesph Quinn AND Charles Melton.
It looks like it will provide a stark and honest portrayal of the war and hell these soldiers go through.
War is co-written and co-directed by Garland and Mendoza. Mendoza was the military advisor who also worked on Garland’s Civil war. The film will hit theaters in early 2025.
