A few years ago, Jim Carrey he made a statement that sounded like he was done with acting. He said that at the very least he was prepared to take a long break and that he would only return “if the angels brought some kind of script written in golden ink that says this is going to be really important for people to see.” He took that break and the golden ink appeared in the form of a script for… Sonic the Hedgehog 3? It seems unlikely. But Carrey explained why he resurfaced to make the sequel, telling the Associated Press:
“I came back to this universe because, first of all, I get to play a genius, which is a little excessive. And you know, it’s just… I bought a lot of stuff and, frankly, I need the money. Yes.”
When AP asked during the Dec. 10 premiere what he said in 2022 about retiring and returning just for the perfect script, Carrey said, “It may have been hyperbole.”
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will be released in American theaters on December 20th. The third chapter of the action-adventure film sees Sonic, Tails and Knuckles face a mysterious adversary known as Shadow the Hedgehog and are forced to form an unlikely alliance with the villain Dr. Robotnik.
My family got to see an early screening and, for what it’s worth, Carrey was hilarious and really brought a lot of fun to the sequel!
The voice cast includes Ben Schwartz as Sonic, Colleen O’Shaughnessey like Code, Idris Elba like Knuckles and Keanu Reeves like Shadow. Live actors include Carrey, James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Kristen Ritter, Natasha Rothwell, Lee Majdoub, Tom Butler, Adam Pally, Shemar Moore AND Alyla Browne.
