Evil has been a success at the box office in the last couple of weeks and fans and audiences love what the first film offered.

As a fan of the Broadway musical, I thought the movie was fantastic. I also enjoyed the performances of Arianna Grande AND Cinzia Erivo although I wasn’t initially a big fan of their casting. They won me over.

Well, it turns out that when the director Jon M. Chu began the journey to bring this musical to life on the big screen, initially wanting to cast no-name actresses in the lead roles of Glinda and Elphaba.

In an interview with GamesRader+, the director explained: “I wanted to have a very clear framework for Wicked. It’s a big enough property on its own, so we can discover two people.

“I was like, ‘We’ll find no name.’ But then we got calls from all these great actresses who wanted to audition and we saw everyone, and they were all really amazing.

He added: “Anyone could have played this role, except there were two people destined to do it, for this particular film at this particular time.

Speaking about the casting process, Chu said: “What we found in the auditions for everyone, was that the songs are so important to this movie, and emotionally important to this movie, that the person who’s doing them has to come in and sing and come out of the song so easily that it’s like butter, like you don’t even notice. That means having good skills in their skills.

After going through the audition process of countless actresses, Chu felt that Granda and Erivo had what it took to play these characters, and they did not disappoint.
