SECRET LEVEL Creators Talk ‘Warhammer 40k’ Episode and Tackle Henry Cavill’s Adaptation

Fans seem to be pretty excited about Prime Video’s upcoming animated video game anthology series Secret levelwhich will adapt more than 15 games into short stories.

One of those stories will be set in the world of Warhammer 40k, and in a recent interview with GamesRadar+, creator Tim Miller and executive producer Dave Wilson has been asked if it will be connected to Henry Cavill’s in any way Warhammer 40k series project, also produced by Prime Video.

Wilson responded: “They’re pretty separated right now. I have to say that we have been collaborating with Games Workshop for years and I am a huge Warhammer fan. We did an episode of 40k 20 years ago at Blur [Studios]and it was one of my favorite and proudest moments of my time with Blur.

“I’ve been looking forward to getting back to 40k for these two decades. But, you know, these franchises don’t belong to us, or anyone in Hollywood, they belong to the creatives in Nottingham who have kept that franchise alive for 40 years, right?

“Whatever Henry is doing and whatever plans we might have, all we really want to do is raise the franchise a little higher, if we can. If we can be complementary to whatever we’re doing together, that would be great.

“The truth is that there are so many stories to tell in Warhammer that even if there were 10 people trying to tell them there would be enough for everyone.”

Wilson went on to talk about the team behind Warhammer 40k and how they are careful about who they allow to touch the property, saying: “The people at Games Workshop are incredibly sharp and attentive to their franchise. That’s the only nice thing about them being successful, for lack of a better way to put it, they’re wary, right?

“They don’t need Hollywood to come in, they were successful before we borrowed what they had. So I think they want to make sure everything gets done right, and they’ll take their time to do it.”

Wilson went on to point out that Miller had actually met with the creators many years earlier about a film that didn’t work. Miller explained, “When we did the first project 20 years ago, they said, ‘Oh, that was really cool, we’d love to make a movie.’ And I said, “Well, let’s go talk to some studios” because we knew the people.

“And at the very first meeting, I had such an education in the world of video games that I was shocked, because everyone, or at least I did and I think a lot of people have, has this impression of like: ‘Oh my God, Hollywood come calling and we’ll make a movie.’

“But for them it was like, ‘Eh, we make these games and they’re extremely popular, we make really much money and the fans love it.’ And if you made a bad movie, it won’t help us. And if you make a good film, it won’t change the balance much.’ So the incentive for them isn’t that great, and that’s only if you make a great movie.”

Every episode of Secret level serves as a “gateway to a new adventure, unlocking exciting worlds of beloved gaming classics and highly anticipated new titles.”
