Jon Watts got great advice from GOONIES director Richard Donner when casting kids for STAR WARS: SKELETON CREW

The next series Star Wars: The Skeleton Crew is described as a The Goonies-Amblin inspired style Star Wars series that follows the journey of four boys “who make a mysterious discovery on their seemingly safe home planet, then become lost in a strange and dangerous galaxy, encountering the likes of Jod Na Nawood, the mysterious character played by Jude Law.

Any project compared to The Goonieswhich has been a fan favorite for generations, has a lot to live up to. We know this series will focus on the friendships and adventures shared between four children, so you know the show’s creators tried long and hard to find the right young actors for each part.

Fortunately, Jon Watts (Spider-Man: House trilogy, Wolves), the co-creator of Skeleton crewreceived some great words of wisdom from an industry legend when it came to casting the show.

Watts explained to GamesRadar+:

“I got this advice from [The Goonies and Superman director] Richard Donnerwho I was lucky enough to hang out with shortly before he passed away.

He was talking about casting The Goonies and said you don’t cast kids to play a role, you cast them for who they are.”

Watts continued:

“So this was always in the back of our minds when we were casting. It stops being a funeral act when you’re patient enough to wait for the real guys who perfectly embody our character to come into the room.

Because you see a lot of great actors, but what you’re really looking for is a guy who AND the character.”

This is good advice. Just get to know the kids you’ll be casting and let their special talents and personalities shine through.

Skeleton crew sees a quartet of child actors – Ravi Cabot-Conyers in the role of Wim, Ryan Kiera Armstrong like Fern, Kyriana Kratter like KB, Robert Timothy Smith as Neel – lead the way into a galaxy far, far away alongside Jude Law’s Jod.

The series premiere is now scheduled for Monday, December 2, which is a full day earlier than expected. The rest of the episodes will still be released on Tuesdays every week.
