Hugh Grant reveals that two different endings were filmed for his horror thriller HERETIC

Last weekend, Hugh Grantis the religious horror thriller Heretic was released in theaters and in it the actor gives one of his best performances so far.

In the film, Grant plays Mr. Reed, a mysterious man whom two young Mormon missionaries visit in an attempt to teach him about their religion. This turns into a nightmarish experience for the missionary sisters as Mr. Reed has sinister plans for them.

Over the course of the film Grant tests Sister Paxton’s faith (Chloe East) and sister Barnes (Sophie Thatcher) through an intense theological debate on religion. Then things take a more violent turn.

If you haven’t seen the film, spoilers ahead.

During the climactic ending of the film, after a series of events, Mr. Reed is trying to hold on to his life and reunites with Sister Paxton, and asks her to pray, realizing that he is going to die at any moment , which he ultimately does.

Grant recently talked about the film’s ending during an interview with GamesRadar+ and revealed that they actually shot two different endings, each featuring a different performance from Grant.

The scene that made the final cut showed a terrified Mr. Reed begging Sister Paxton to pray, but the other one he shot shows the character still trying to make it a game.

Grant explains: “I filmed it two ways. There’s a moment where I crawl across the floor towards her, after being stabbed, which I did two ways.

“One where he’s still trying to make it fun, just as he tried to make the whole night fun. He kind of says, “Look, it’s fun to die.”

“And then I did another one where all his defenses are down and he’s absolutely shitting himself thinking he’s going to die, and he’s very scared. He wants some comfort and he wants her to console him, maybe with a prayer.”

As for Grant’s favorite shot, he says his favorite of the two was the one we see in the final film.

Grant concludes: “It’s not entirely clear to me the way they edited it, which of these two performances they’re going to do. I think it’s the latter.

“But I know they framed the last 20 minutes a lot, the film was long, so maybe it’s not entirely clear. I really like the second way: finally, after a full hour and a half of this guy being totally in control, he’s a scared rabbit.”
