Kraven the Hunter it was originally supposed to be released in theaters in January of 2023. The release date was moved a few times before finally landing on December 13th of this year, and when the film comes out it’s expected to explode at the box office.
The film is estimated to gross $20 million to $25 million with its opening weekend debut. This isn’t really a surprise, given that Sony Pictures doesn’t have the best track record with the non-Spider-Man Marvel films it produces.
Box Office Pro reports that “there is a very real possibility that Kraven’s entire domestic record fails to even surpass the October 2024 opening weekend gross of Venom: The Last Dance ($51 million domestic opening, domestic total of $128.8 after four weeks), the lowest-grossing of Sony’s three Venom films.”
Cabbage! This report comes a few days later Kraven the Hunter director JC Chandor begged fans to give his Sony/Marvel film a chance.
He said: “Some fans out there, a lot of fans, were upset with certain decisions and certain results [of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe]. People need to give us a chance, come out and support this movie, and literally try to wash away some of the other things that have happened. Give our film a chance.
“I think they’ll realize that we did everything we could to give them a pretty entertaining story. You’ll see when the movie is finished, there’s the potential for a lot of things to happen. But my goal was to isolate our movie, protect it and just tell a good story and then we’ll have the opportunity to do a lot of fun things.
As a fan of Kraven the Hunteryes…of course I will give the film a chance. I don’t expect much, but I hope it exceeds my expectations. The fact is, Marvel fans have been burned by Sony so many times with their Marvel movies that it makes sense that people won’t show up to watch it in theaters.
Kraven the Hunter is the visceral story of how and why one of Marvel’s most iconic villains came to be. Set before his infamous revenge with Spider-Man, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson plays Kraven.
In Kraven the Hunter, Russian immigrant Sergei Kravinoff is on a mission to prove himself as the world’s greatest hunter. Taylor-Johnson called the project “a Marvel film strongly anchored in the real world. We know he is a ferocious hunter, a highly trained killer.” He enthusiastically proclaimed, “Fuck yes, it will be rated R!”
The film is also the protagonist Ariana De Bose like Calypso, Russell Crowe as Nikolai Kravinoff, Fred Hechinger like a chameleon, Alessandro Nivola like a bad stranger, Levi Miller, AND Capture-22 star Christopher Abbott as the main villain, The Foreigner.
Kraven the Hunter film in theaters nationwide on December 13, 2024.
