The incredible official STAR TREK UNIFICATION short features the return of William Shatner’s Captain Kirk

To celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of the film Generations of Star Trekwhich marked the definitive appearance of William Shatner like Captain James T. Kirk, Roddenberry Archive and their technology partner OTOY have released an official short film titled “Unification.”

The short film sees the return of Shatner’s Kirk, who sacrificed himself at a crucial moment in the film and ultimately saved millions of lives. As he dies, Kirk reflects on his life with a sense of fulfillment, his last words being “Oh my God…” – a touching conclusion to his legendary journey.

The short film is set around the time of Kirk’s death. It’s a much better ending for Kirk than how the movie ended his story and it brought tears to my eyes, especially when we see him reunite with Leonard Nimoy’s Spock.

The film connects several decades of Star Trek tradition and presents Robin Curtisit’s Saavik (Star Trek III: The Search for Spock), Mahe Thaissa AND Gary Mitchell’S J.M. Colt (1964 The cage), Kirk’s friend since the second Star Trek pilot episode, Gary Mitchell, played by the original actor Gary Lockwood.

The short also incorporates the character Yor (Gordon Tarpley) from Star Trek: Discovery which passed from the Kelvin Universe to the Prime Universe.

According to OTOY, Shatner worked with them to “fine-tune the technical and creative direction needed to bring his portrayal of Kirk back to live action.” This included “adding his voice to recount a key moment in the experience.”

765874: Unification was directed by Carlos Baenafrom a story created by Jules Urbach and features original music by Oscar winners Star Trek composer Michele Gioacchino. The set design was provided by Star Trek: Picard production designer David Blass.

Visual effects supervisor Marco Spatny led OTOY’s team of artists and animators, which combined digital and physical prosthetics with live-action location photography, virtual production and CG set extensions.

The visual effects in Unification they were created using OTOY’s “Octane” rendering software and the “Render Network” decentralized GPU rendering platform. The characters and props were digitized using OTOY’s Academy Award-winning “LightStage” scanning system.

These locations were scanned and merged with CG set extensions to become part of the Archive’s growing library of 3D worlds and locations.

I love this short film and hope you enjoy it!
