Co-founder of Riot Games, League of Legends creator and Arcane producer Marc Merrill cleared up some surrounding confusion Arcane and his original “five season” plan.
In a report he revealed Arcane is the most expensive animated show ever made with a budget of $250 million to produce 18 episodes, it was also shared that there was originally a five-season plan for the animated series.
Well, Merrill is debunking the five-season claim and says the Netflix series would only last two seasons.
Merrill shared on Reddit: “Arcane it was always written to last two seasons. We always imagined telling more stories and continuing to expand the universe.
“That has never changed – people just pick up on misleading rumors or headlines and Riot doesn’t correct them, but given the rumors that have gained momentum, I’m happy to clarify.”
Merrill went on to explain, “Just because that’s our intent, doesn’t mean it’s easy or that we can pump this stuff out like a factory – just like making games that are worth players’ time/love is really hard, so too is telling stories fantastic and making incredible shows/movies (especially when we’re building it from scratch for the first time).”
Co-creator Cristiano Linke he previously talked about the show’s two seasons, saying, “We always had a specific story in mind. Look, you could have stretched it out, I’m sure. But for us, it was always like we started with this in mind.” I think there’s also a personal aspect to us as creatives.
“We’ve all seen the TV shows where the writers are clearly running out of energy. How inspired are you and can you stay on the same thing, for how long?
“It’s been nine years for us, with these characters. I think there’s also an accountability aspect to this, where we’re like, this is what we had in mind.”
He added: “This is the story that we had in our head that we want to tell. It’s irresponsible to stretch it to the point where it feels like we can’t even do it justice. I think that was an important part of the story.” We don’t want to overdo it.”
Until now Arcane Season 2 was incredible! I loved this show and think it’s worth every penny to bring this story to life.
