James Gunn says Henry Cavill’s Superman costume was ‘torn to shreds’ during SUPERMAN auditions

Actor Tom Brittney I recently talked about auditions for James Gunn to play the Man of Steel in his next film Superman movie.

One thing he revealed was that he tried out Henry Cavill’s Superman costume for an audition and that he tore it. He explained that “It takes about half an hour to get in – to be sewn in.

“And yes, I think I might have torn it accidentally. I was more muscular than Henry Cavill, that’s the only reason.”

Gunn was recently asked about this and he confirmed that it was true and that Cavil’s suit was in fact “ripped to shreds.”

The director said: “Yes. Tom messed up and then Corenswet came along and he was too tall, so he got torn to pieces. By the way, Tom is truly one of my favorite actors. An incredibly talented guy.”

Superman will tell the story of “Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas.

“He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.”

We also hear that the film represents “a complete shift into hardcore science fiction and fantasy, the exact opposite of Man of Steel.

“It’s set in a world very different from ours and very far from the DCEU. Heroes have been around for centuries and we’ll see how that has influenced the history of this world and shaped the DCU.”

When it comes to David Corenswetof Superman, Gunn said it will “blow people’s minds.”

Superman stars Rachel Brosnahan as Lios Lane, Nicola Hoult as Lex Luthor; Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern; Isabela Mercede as Hawkgirl; Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt/Mr. Terrific; Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen; María Gabriela de Faría in the role of Angela Spica, aka The Engineer; Sara Sampaioas Eva Teschmacher; AND Terence Rosemore as Otis.

Superman will launch the cinematic portion of DC Studios’ Gods and Monsters: Part 1. The theatrical release is scheduled for July 11, 2025.
