John Krasinski on Convincing Executives to Direct A QUIET PLACE “Sorry, is Jim from THE OFFICE directing this movie?”

John Krasinski was named the sexiest man alive by People magazine this week, but he will always be Jim Halpert in the heart of The Office fans everywhere. And while that’s endearing, that’s exactly why studio executives were reluctant to take him seriously when he wanted to make the leap from TV star to director.

During a recent interview with People (via CinemaBlend), Krasinski recalled how he fought to direct the horror film A quiet place (2018), which spawned a successful sequel and prequel. Although he was initially asked to play the character of the father in the film, he eventually wanted to delve deeper into his work as a writer and director. He explained:

“I read the script and it was exactly six weeks after Emily and I had our second daughter. And I remember that my whole world was different and the way I processed and saw the world was different.

And it really struck me that if I had the opportunity to write a love letter to my kids it would be this incredible idea that the writers had. So I said, “If I can rewrite the script and put my own spin on it and direct it, I’ll make the movie.” This is exactly what every producer wants to hear.”

He was becoming a parent who really connected him to the story on a deeper level. Krasinski went on to reveal how difficult it was to convince the brass at Paramount that he was the right person to direct. A quiet placeespecially given his reputation as Jim The Office.

“They were terrified and I had to pitch to the studio about 54 times before they said yes. And I’m pretty sure someone said “Sorry, is Jim from The Office going to direct this movie?” And I said “I’m John, but we’ll get to that.” Okay.” And then they finally let me direct.”

He must have really sold his vision for the film, because he executed it and made a fantastic film, and ultimately a franchise. He continued to direct A quiet place 2and even though he didn’t direct or write First day, helped develop the prequel story.

He went on to direct the well-received family film Ifin which he starred, and has since acted in many other roles as well. We will next see him in the film directed by Guy Ritchie, Fountain of Youth.
