John Rhys-Davies says he would return to play Gimli under one condition

With Warner Bros. developing several Middle-earth film projects The Lord of the Rings cinematic universe created by Peter Jacksonthere are opportunities for many familiar characters to recur.

We know there are plans to bring Ian McKellanThe return of Gandalf and other potential characters include Orlando Bloom like Legolas, Elijah Wood like Frodo, Viggo Mortensen like Aragorn, and perhaps also John Rhys-Davies like Gimli.

Davis wasn’t a fan of the makeup process he goes through in the original Lord of the Rings film. It was so bad for him that he didn’t come back The Hobbit movie because he didn’t want to face the idea of spending all day covered in makeup and prosthetics.

If you didn’t know, that process led to an allergic reaction and left the actor physically ill. So if Rhys-Davies had been asked to return, he would have said he would, but he had one condition…. no makeup.

She explained to Collider: “If they invited me… oh God, could I dare to wear makeup again and lose my skin? Maybe with CGI. […] Times have changed and technology has moved forward, if I didn’t have to spend eight hours a day for three years of my life in a makeup chair, I could actually do it.”

Davies went on to say that the costumes are also an issue and said, “The other thing is that I’m physically no longer capable of putting on 80 pounds of armor and extra stuff and climbing mountains.”

We have no idea if there are plans to bring Gimli back, but the first film coming out is The Hunt For Gollum, directed by Andy Serkis. Beyond this, we don’t know what other projects are planned.

However, with The Hunt for Goillum occurred between the end of The Hobbit trilogy e The Fellowship of the RingGilmi runs in that universe and could be included if the creative team wanted him in the story.

Gollum visited the Lonely Mountain at some point in his journey, so that would be the place to put Gimli in the story.

The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum It is expected to arrive in 2026.
