I finally had the opportunity to watch The Penguin season finale last night, and that final scene between Oz and Vic destroyed me. It was an incredible season finale, but damn… that last scene hurt to watch.
The final episode was shocking and intense, and today we have a new featurette that delves into the episode, titled “A Big Thing or a Little Thing.”
If you haven’t seen the episode yet, there are spoilers ahead!
Towards the end of the episode we see Oz Cobb strangle Victor “Vic” Aguilar in cold blood. The character has seen Oz at his most vulnerable and kills him because he decides that keeping him around will make him weak.
When it comes to that scene the showrunner Lauren LeFranc explained: “Towards the end of the show, Victor saw Oz at his most vulnerable. The two boys experienced everything together.
“Someone who sees their own vulnerability feels like a weakness, and according to Oz, they can’t achieve what they feel they should achieve if they have those weaknesses around.”
He adds: “That moment when he kills Victor is him killing his own heart and becoming the monster… I knew the goal of the series ultimately was to reach the top or get close to that goal, but when he achieved power, he also lost much of himself.”
Rhenzy Felizwho plays Vic, continued, “For him to be betrayed by the person he considers family now that we’ve finally done this thing. We’re at the top of the game. Reading the scripts made me go, ‘Wow, this boy it’s worse than we thought.'”
Producer Matt Reeves he said, “The fact [Oz] He goes to such extremes because he’s so broken, that’s the tragedy of the story.”
As I write this, I literally just finished watching the final episode, so I’m still shocked and processing.
As for Batman, even if he doesn’t show up The Penguinthe episode ends with the camera panning outside Oz’s new penthouse, where the Bat-Signal shines against the Gotham City skyline.
