Six years ago it was announced that Netflix was making a Hulk Hogan biopic e Thor actor Chris Hemsworth he was supposed to play the wrestling superstar. Todd Phillips he was directing from his own script Joker writer Scott Silverand everyone involved was pretty excited.
Earlier this year, Phillips revealed that the film would no longer be moving forward, but no one explained things. Now, Hogan explains why the project fell apart.
During a recent interview on the PBD podcast, Hogan said of Netflix:
“They missed a beat in the contract. There was a payment that wasn’t made at the right time.” Hogan highlighted the quality of the script, calling it “extraordinary” and noting, “When I read it, I thought, oh my God, this is really good.”
Hogan said he worked closely with Silver for three years, contributing his insights into the good and bad sides of wrestling. “I spent about three years with this writer going back and forth. When I read it, it was just very, very dark,” he said, adding that this darker tone could resonate with the public’s interest in the reality of wrestling.
According to him, the script was so powerful that it had “Oscar” potential for Hemsworth, especially considering he had never played a real person before.
Ultimately, Hogan chose to abandon the project when Netflix missed its contractual payment deadline. “I was just moving on at the time, and when they, work-wise, missed an appointment, there was an option for me to withdraw and I did,” he confirmed.
It’s a shame for the fans and everyone involved that the film didn’t succeed. Are you sorry that this movie fell apart?
