AS The Penguin the series ends next week, producer Matt Reeves he’s talking about the future of The Batman universe, which is called the Batman Epic Crime Saga.
The events of The Penguin series will lead to sequels to The Batman and we’ll have a clearer idea of what that will look like after next week’s season finale.
During a recent conversation with Andy Serkis shared in Interview Magazine, Reeves talked about what he’s trying to do with the Batman franchise as a whole: “We’ve been talking, and it’s exciting because people are now embracing the show.
“My fantasy is taking shape, which is very exciting, and HBO has been incredibly supportive from the beginning. Now to see the show being embraced is really, really exciting.
“We’ve talked about doing more shows. I wanted to make sure I didn’t do the origin story, which a lot of other series have done.
“I think the idea of being able to put a lens on these characters is a really exciting idea. It’s about cities and their dysfunctions and the world and its dysfunctions, which is what Batman stories are about.
“They all believe that Gotham is a place that should be better. And you can experience this almost novelistic epic crime saga, but you can also have these separate experiences.
“They have their dramatic value. So the story of Oz is the story of Oz, and the idea is to do these other stories in the same way.”
I actually liked The Penguin series more The Batman and I hope the quality of the storytelling and filmmaking continues to improve as the franchise continues. The Penguin is definitely getting me more excited about what Batman: Part II will deliver.
During a previous interview, Reeves offered some details about the sequel, saying, “We shared [the script] since we’re getting along with DC, and they’re super excited. It will dig into the epic story of deeper corruption and go to some places [Bruce Wayne] I couldn’t even predict it in the first one.”
He added: “What was important to me was to find a way to take these pop icons, these mythical characters that everyone knows, and translate them so that Gotham felt like a place in our world.
“We may push ourselves to the edge of the fantastic, but we will never enter the fantastic. It means you feel quite rooted.”
Reeves has a strong, solid vision for what he’s trying to do, and I hope he can follow through and tell every story he wants to tell in Batman’s world.
