As you know, the whole John Wick the saga began because a group of bad guys killed his dog. This is what set Wick off and he embarked on a series of brutally violent revenge killings.
Well, it turns out that while the original idea was to kill off John Wick’s dog, it almost didn’t happen. The dog almost survived, but Keanu Reeves he was against the idea and believed the dog should die.
During an interview with Business Insider, director David Leitch explained, “We were told, ‘It’s bad luck.’ “It’s bad juju.” “It’s Old Man Yellow, you can’t do it!” “No one will want to see it on the screen; you’ll alienate the audience.”
“And I say, ‘We’re going to kill people at close range; killing the dog is one thing, but what about the brutal slaughter of all these humans? Will they be able to accept it?'”
The idea for the dog to survive came after filming the violent home invasion scene, in which the puppy is killed off-screen.
Director Chad Stahelski he continued, “For the next couple of weeks we were suggested to shoot an alternate ending that revealed that the puppy didn’t actually die.
But Keanu defended us. And Basil [Iwanyk, producer] they stood up to investors and finally thought, ‘Fuck it, let’s see what these guys can do.'”
Look, it’s incredibly sad to see an innocent puppy killed in such a cruel manner, but the story needed that to happen to light the fuse inside Wick and push him to get back into the game and embark on his murderous rampage of revenge. I mean, that puppy was a gift from his late wife.
