The highly anticipated ABC crossover Abbott Elementary and FX It’s always sunny in Philadelphia it just got bigger.
It has already been revealed that the Sunny the characters will appear on Abbott this season, and now it’s been revealed that, as part of a two-episode event, the Abbott teachers will also be present Sunny to hang out with the Gang at Paddy’s Pub.
Earlier this month, Abbott creator and star Fifth Brunson AND Sunny star/co-creator Rob McElhenney revealed that the two shows would be teaming up for a very special episode of Abbott Elementary (which Brunson previously hinted at at San Diego Comic-Con).
The mash-up made sense, given that both shows are set in Philadelphia, plus they both air on Disney-owned networks.
THE Sunny cast, which includes McElhenney, Charlie Day, Glenn Howerton, Kaitlin Olson AND Danny DeVitothey’ve already filmed their scenes Abbott episode 409, in a plot that will occupy the entire half hour. Olson revealed the crossover twist Thursday on the red carpet at Variety Event The power of women.
“It was a lot of fun,” Olson said, of filming Abbott episode, adding, “And they’re jumping into our world in a couple of weeks, which is very exciting. So it’s been really fun for both of our casts to be able to do, they do a cable show and we do a network show.
From Abbott star Lisa Anna Walter (who plays tough second-grade teacher Melissa Schemmenti) said Variety who had asked Brunson to write his scenes with Olson’s Dee Reynolds, Variety asked what the Sunny made like a star.
“I was just excited to make them, like, evil,” Olson responded. “They can’t do that in school; they can do it at the bar.
THE “Sunny-ON-AbbottThe episode will air first, and executive producers Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacker revealed that Day’s character will have a “pretty significant storyline.”
Schumacker talked about unraveling the story, saying, “At first it was kind of a joke that the two shows should cross over. On paper, it seems like they would be a real tonal mix. But then Rob and Charlie came to our writers’ room and we came up with some rough ideas.
“From there, we emailed beat sheets back and forth and then an outline. They were super game about everything. Any concerns we had about the shows’ tones clashing with each other were alleviated the moment we started shooting with Charlie.
It is not clear, however, what Sunny the team has in store for the Abbott characters from their show. Writing for season 17 of It’s always sunny in Philadelphia took place this fall, and production on the season’s eight episodes has just begun (with an eye on returning in 2025).
Sunny had to work around the busy schedules of stars, including Olson on the new ABC hit High potential and Howerton in the Netflix series Sirens.
