OREGON TRAIL Action-comedy film in development at Apple Studios

The classic elementary school computer game Oregon Trail is getting a film adaptation and is in development at Apple Studios.

Like many of you, I remember playing this game all the time as a child. It was a pleasure to be able to sit at the computer desk and play games at school!

The film is described as an action comedy and will be directed and produced by Will Speck AND Josh Gordon with The Lucas brothers. ( Judas and the Black Messiah) AND Max Reismann write the screenplay. Benj Pasek AND Justin Paul set to provide music and produce originals.

The film is “meant to mimic 19th century pioneer times, following a covered wagon heading west.” It has also been reported that the film will feature a couple of original musical numbers in the vein of Barbie.

Oregon Trail is a hilariously dark survival simulation game that puts players in command of a group of wagons traveling across the 19th century American frontier.

Players manage resources, make choices and face a series of random obstacles such as rivers, wild animal attacks, diseases and adverse weather conditions.

The game’s charm lies in the constant and unrelenting series of misfortunes, from dysentery and snakebites to food shortages and sudden death.

The game’s pixelated graphics and simplistic text descriptions make each calamity unexpectedly entertaining, especially as it coldly informs players of family members falling ill or the entire group getting swept into a river after an ill-fated crossing attempt.

The hilarity of Oregon Trail arises from the contrast between his educational intentions and the often absurd and tragic situations that arise. Designed to teach children about the difficulties of westward expansion, the game instead made its way into popular culture as players desperately attempted to make practical decisions, only to see bad luck strike with sad regularity.

It will be interesting and fun to see how this movie turns out!
