28 years later star Ralph Fiennes recently offered some new details regarding the film trilogy developed by Danny Boyle AND Alex Garland.
During a recent interview with IndieWire, Fiennes confirmed, “It’s three movies,” and then revealed, “two of which have been shot.”
As for plot details, the actor went on to say: “Britain has for 28 years been dealing with this terrible plague of infected people who are violent, rabid human beings with few pockets of uninfected communities.
“And it’s about a boy who wants to find a doctor to help his dying mother. He guides his mother through this beautiful territory of Northern England. But of course the infected are hiding around them in the forests, hills and woods.
“But find a doctor who is a man who we might think is going to be strange and strange, but is actually a force for good.”
It was also revealed that the sequel will be titled 28 years later Part II: The Temple of BonesWhich Nia Da Costa he was in talks to direct it earlier this year, with a screenplay by Garland. It is not known whether she directed it or not. I assume he did, though.
Cillian Murphy reprises his role in 28 years later as Jim, a former cycle courier who had previously awakened from a coma to discover the “rabies virus” that has decimated London. He is also an executive producer.
The next sequel is also the protagonist Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, Jack O’Connell, Erin Kellyman AND Edvin Ryding.
Garland previously offered some insights into the film’s theme. He shared, “It has to do with the passage of time and thinking about what effect the passage of time would have.”
He added: “Is this what you would traditionally call a post-apocalyptic state? Or has something else started to manifest itself? Time is really at the heart of the film’s engine.”
Previously, when teasing the third film, Garland said, “I have a really interesting idea, but it’s a much bigger movie, and one of the things that 28 days later it’s that it was small and punk and this idea is less small and punk.”
The film is the protagonist Jodie Comer, Cilian Murphy, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jack O’ConnellAND Ralph Fiennes . The Wonders director Nia Da Costa is in talks to direct the second film.
28 years later arrives in theaters June 20, 2025 from Sony. It was previously reported that the film was shot using an iPhone 15 Pro.
