ARMOR WARS writer Yassir Lester discusses Marvel’s transition from TV project to film

The project remained on the back burner for Marvel Armor warswhich will tell the deeper story of James “Rhodey” Rhodes, aka War Machine, who has thus far been a peripheral character in the MCU.

It’s been four years since the project was announced as a Disney+ series, and two years ago it was refocused to become a feature film and star. Don Cheadle he’s been with us through it all.

Although, even last week, he was quoted as saying he had no idea what was going on with the project.

The writer of the film, Yassir Lesterwho originally wrote the script for the series, recently met with ComicBook to discuss his next film The gutterwith whom he wrote and co-directed Isaiah Lesterand was asked about his position on the matter Armor wars.

Lester spoke about the project and its evolution, saying:

“I think Marvel is constantly in a state of, ‘What’s the coolest thing?’ And I… I honestly believe that some of their movies should have been series and some of their series should have been movies. And I think they’re taking that into consideration more, thinking about it a little more now.”

On a technical level, Lester says there was no massive creative disruption due to the pivot Armor wars from a TV series to a movie, “Until they’ve started shooting it yet, it’s kind of like, who cares?” That said, Lester admitted, “I think the story I told is a very entertaining series.”

According to the writer, the biggest change in the Armor wars The MCU plan was for the film to simply get to the crux of Col. James Rhodes’ continuing story faster than the long-form character study that would be the TV show. He also touched on the poor reception of Marvel Disney+ series Secret invasion it may also have been a factor. He explained:

“Given as with Secret invasion – all these other things [like] since Rhodey’s story needs to fit into the larger universe, there’s a faster version that pushes him back into the story a little faster, as opposed to a meditation on who the character is.

When both Yassir and Isaiah Lester were asked if they would be willing to direct the film Armor wars movie, Isaiah was unabashedly supportive of it: “Absolutely. Absolutely. I will. I would. Yes,” but Yassir had an important caveat: The money has to be right. “You know, a lot of people say ‘yes’ or ‘I have no idea.’ [about] “Would you direct a Marvel movie?” And we say: look, what they were Russo Brothers paid?”

“Put me in a cave, Marvey, and pay me 50 million dollars. I will do whatever you said,” Isaiah added.

But since Cheadle is in the dark about the project, it doesn’t look like anything will happen anytime soon. We hope to receive an update in the near future. Can’t wait? Armor wars?
