A few months ago we reported that actor Rob Lowe was in talks with the studios to get the gang back together for a St. Elmo’s Fire followed.
The original film was released in 1985, and nearly 40 years later, many of the cast have gone on to have incredible careers in Hollywood.
Despite the discouraging nickname “Brat Pack” that was given to the young adults protagonists of the film, which was discussed in the great documentary Brats on Hulu, they went on to solidify themselves into some major roles in TV and film.
Now, two alumni of the original film, Lowe and his co-star Demi MooreI’m in talks about what a sequel might look like. Lowe continued with Kelly Ripa Let’s talk off camera podcast and explained: “We’re very much in touch now because we’re actively trying to do this [the] St. Elmo’s Fire followed.”
He added:
“It’s going a little slower than I would have liked. But that’s a good thing because we’re trying to find the right writer and the right story. But all the actors, everyone is on board. Everyone is excited.”
The original Joel Schumacher film starring Lowe, Moore, Andie MacDowell, Andrew McCarthy, Ally Sheedy, Sea Winningham, Judd Nelson AND Emilio Estevez as a group of recent college graduates struggling with adulthood as they venture out into the world.
Lowe went on to say:
“I think now, the theme of St. Elmo’s Fire today is that it is never too late for happiness. Our kids aren’t in school and maybe some of us are divorced and maybe some of us have gotten sick – all the things you’re dealing with when you get to our age, this is an opportunity to explore those themes with characters that people they know and Love.
“And I think instead of just a run for the money, let’s reboot it because people know the title. I actually think there’s a lot to be said about why we’re doing this. And I’m super excited about it. Let’s hope we can do it.”
It feels like the other great movie of the 80s, The Big Chillwhich also boasted a great cast (and a great soundtrack) in which a group of college friends reunite to confront each other after the death of a mutual friend. I think a sequel about these people, now in their sixties, could be a great film if they found a good story to tell.
Lowe previously told Entertainment Tonight that the sequel is in the “early stages” after “meeting with the studio.” He noted that the documentary Bratsreleased this summer, “only increased the excitement around” the film and a potential sequel.
