Tom Holland he made his big debut as Spider-Man Captain America: Civil War and with all the issues surrounding the rights to the character, seeing Spider-Man with the Avengers was something fans never thought they’d see at the time, so it was a really cool moment!
Holland recently appeared on the Rich Roll podcast where he talked about his debut and how his first scene in the MCU was initially substantially shortened. Luckily, his co-star and scene partner Robert Downey Jr. fought to save him.
Holland began by explaining how things went with his audition: “When I had to take my mark and do my scene with Downey, it was really overwhelming. I am very grateful to Downey. When I did mine [screen test]it was eight pages of dialogue.
“It was a long scene. It went great. My agent told me to learn my lines exactly. When I did my first take with Downey, he started improvising everything and changing everything. This gave me license to follow him.
“You can’t beat Downey, but you can ride his coattails. And those are great coats to ride. I just followed his lead and we improvised. After I auditioned I thought I could do it. It went so well.
Some things changed when he went to the movie set to shoot the live scene: “When I got to the set after getting the gig, my scene had been significantly scaled down from what I had done in the audition. Now it was maybe two pages. Downey chimed in: ‘Where did all the guy’s jokes go?'”
Directors Joe AND Antonio Russo he explained to Downey that their script was already huge and that they couldn’t spend time on the entire scene Holland had auditioned with. But Downey Jr. wouldn’t let it fly.
Holland continued: “Downey was the one who said, ‘No, you’re going to want to spend time on this. Let’s take it all back from the audition. You can always cut it, but you’ll want to have it.
“And they used it all. I owe it to him. It’s really cool. I’d love to do that one day… If I’m lucky enough to bring Miles Morales into the MCU, I’d love to do for a kid what Downey did for me.”
It’s always nice to have someone by your side fighting for you when you need it. That seems like a rare thing these days. Good for Downey Jr. for stepping up in that situation.
Holland did a great job as Spider-Man and will be back Spider-Man 4 AND Avengers: Judgment Day. The actor was also recently cast Christopher Nolanit’s the next movie.
